In April 2024, we met with Omar Vela (the man in the pictures), the current president of the Acatenango cooperative. Interestingly, Omar's father, also named Omar, was a president of the cooperative in his time. Organizing small producers is a challenging task, and when Omar's father took over the cooperative, the institution was bankrupt. Poor financial planning can significantly impact small producers, even when they band together.
We are currently working with small producers on the outskirts of the Acatenango volcano, near the village of San Pedro Yepocapa. During our visit, we were relieved to discover that the cooperative has a medical center offering reduced fees for everyone in the area. Javier believes that the lack of infrastructure is a fundamental issue within the industry, and it's impressive to see privately held institutions providing solutions to local villages.
This coffee comes from the other side of the Antigua Region, divided by the Acatenango volcano. The volcano enriches the soil with minerals, and the high altitudes where this coffee is grown contribute to producing an incredible cup.
